How to Get a GST Invoice from Zomato: Step-by-Step Guide (2025)
Published March 2025 · 7 min read · By Invoice Practice Lab
Ordered lunch on Zomato and need to submit an expense claim to your employer? Or running a small business and want to recover input tax credit on food orders for client meetings? The regular Zomato order summary is not a valid GST document. You need a proper GST invoice — and Zomato does issue them, but you have to know exactly where to look and what information to provide. This guide walks you through the entire process step by step.
Why You Need a GST Invoice (Not Just the Order Receipt)
The order confirmation and delivery notification you receive from Zomato are not GST-compliant documents. They do not contain your GSTIN, the supplier's GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, or the formal tax breakdown required under the GST Act. For the following use cases, you need a proper GST invoice:
- Office reimbursement: Most Indian companies require a GST invoice (not just a receipt) for food expenses above ₹500–1,000
- Input tax credit (ITC): Businesses registered under GST can claim ITC on delivery charges if the food is for a qualifying business purpose
- Audits and compliance: If your company is GST-audited, unregistered receipts for expense claims can be flagged
- Personal record-keeping: A GST invoice contains more detail and is a more authoritative record than the app's order summary
Step-by-Step: How to Request a GST Invoice from Zomato
- Open the Zomato app on your phone (iOS or Android) and ensure you are logged in
- Tap the profile icon (bottom right corner of the home screen)
- Tap "Orders" to see your order history
- Select the specific order for which you need the GST invoice
- Scroll down on the order detail page until you see the "Get GST Invoice" button
- Enter your GSTIN — this is your 15-digit GST Identification Number (or your company's GSTIN for business claims)
- Tap "Submit" — Zomato will send the GST invoice as a PDF to your registered email address
Deadline: You must request the GST invoice within 30 days of the order date. After 30 days, the option is permanently removed and Zomato will not issue the invoice retrospectively, even through customer support. Set a reminder if you have ongoing expense claim cycles.
What GSTIN to Enter
The GSTIN you enter determines who the invoice is addressed to:
- For personal reimbursement claims: Enter your employer's GSTIN (ask your accounts or HR team). The invoice will be addressed to your company.
- For your own registered business: Enter your own GSTIN.
- For personal records without ITC claim: Some users enter their own PAN-based GSTIN if they are individually registered, but note that food GST cannot be claimed as ITC for personal consumption.
A GSTIN is formatted as: State Code (2 digits) + PAN (10 digits) + Entity Code (1 digit) + Check Digit (2 characters). Example: 27AABCU9603R1ZX (Maharashtra-based entity).
Restaurant GSTIN vs Zomato GSTIN — Two Separate GSTs
This is the most misunderstood part of Zomato's billing. Your Zomato GST invoice actually contains two different supplier GSTINs, because two separate services are being provided:
| Service | Supplier | GSTIN on Invoice | GST Rate |
| Food items | Restaurant | Restaurant's GSTIN | 5% (2.5% CGST + 2.5% SGST) |
| Delivery service | Zomato | Zomato's GSTIN | 18% (9% CGST + 9% SGST) |
| Platform fee | Zomato | Zomato's GSTIN | 18% (9% CGST + 9% SGST) |
Since January 1, 2022, food aggregators like Zomato collect and remit GST on restaurant food directly under Section 9(5) of the CGST Act. However, on the invoice, the restaurant's GSTIN still appears as the supplier for the food portion — Zomato acts as the tax collector on behalf of the restaurant.
What a Zomato GST Invoice Contains
A proper Zomato GST invoice (as opposed to the regular order summary) includes:
- Invoice number and date
- Zomato's legal name, address, and GSTIN
- Restaurant name, address, and GSTIN (for food portion)
- Your name and the GSTIN you provided
- Itemised food list with SAC codes
- Subtotal, packaging fee, delivery fee, platform fee
- CGST, SGST (or IGST for inter-state orders) amounts broken down by rate
- Total amount paid
- Order ID for cross-referencing
How to Enter the Zomato Invoice in an Expense Claim
Once you have the PDF invoice, here is how to submit it for reimbursement:
- Save the PDF from your email with a clear filename (e.g., "Zomato_Invoice_OrderID_Date.pdf")
- In your expense management system (SAP Concur, Zoho Expense, spreadsheet, etc.), create a new expense entry
- Select category: "Meals & Entertainment" or "Client Food"
- Enter: date, amount, vendor (Zomato), GST amount, purpose of the meal
- Attach the PDF invoice
- Note: Most Indian companies only reimburse food for business purposes — a meal with colleagues for work counts; a personal lunch generally does not
What to Do If the Restaurant Is Not GST Registered
Many small restaurants listed on Zomato have annual turnover below ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs in some states) and are therefore not required to register for GST. In this case:
- The restaurant cannot issue a GST invoice
- Zomato can only issue an invoice for the delivery fee and platform fee portion (which are Zomato's own services)
- The food subtotal will appear as a non-taxable or exempt supply from an unregistered supplier
- You cannot claim ITC on the food portion from an unregistered restaurant
- For expense reimbursement purposes, your company's policy may or may not accept invoices from unregistered suppliers — check with your finance team

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a GST invoice from Zomato without a GSTIN?
No. The GST invoice feature in the Zomato app requires you to enter a valid GSTIN. Without a GSTIN, Zomato will only show the regular order summary, which is not a GST-compliant document. If you need a document for record-keeping but don't have a GSTIN, the order summary with the amount and Zomato's details is the best you can get.
Does Zomato Gold / Zomato Pro affect GST invoices?
No. Your subscription tier (regular, Gold, or Pro) does not affect how GST invoices are generated. The GST invoice will reflect the actual amount paid (after any discount from Gold/Pro membership), and GST is calculated on the final discounted amount, not the original price.
I requested the invoice but didn't receive the email — what should I do?
First, check your spam/junk folder. Zomato sends the invoice from a no-reply address that sometimes gets filtered. If it's not there, verify that your registered email address on Zomato is correct (Profile > Edit Profile). If the email is correct and you still haven't received it within 24 hours, contact Zomato support via the app (Help > Account Issues) and quote your Order ID.
Is it possible to claim ITC on Zomato orders?
Input Tax Credit on food is specifically blocked under Section 17(5)(b) of the CGST Act for personal consumption. However, if your business provides food as a workplace benefit to employees (e.g., lunch subsidies), or orders food for client hospitality that forms part of your taxable supply, you may be able to claim ITC on the delivery fee component. This is a nuanced area of GST law — consult a qualified CA or GST practitioner before claiming ITC on food orders.
